Every Halloween, The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush holds a school-wide costume contest. This tradition allows for students to put their creativity to use, as they come to school dressed as movie characters, Halloween monsters, and celebrities. Students are then invited to an assembly in which every person who has participated in the contest has the ability to show off their costume. From animals, to rappers, to the Riverdale gang, there was no shortage of eye-catching costumes. The three categories in the Halloween contest were: Scariest Costume, Funniest Costume, and Most Creative Costume. Zoe Taylor, who came dressed as Corpse Bride, won for Scariest Costume. Tyler Bennington’s Lieutenant Dingle getup won for Funniest Costume, hid on-stage “mooning” receiving a chorus of laughter and applause from the students at Rush. Brian Bertollini’s Dunkin’ Donuts King costume won for Most Creative Costume, and it’s safe to say that the munchkins he handed out in the morning helped secure some of his votes. At the end of the day, the purpose of this contest was not the titles, but about giving Rush students an outlet for their imagination. Each student was given an opportunity to present their individuality and artistic skill through their costumes- a tradition that we hope to see continued at Rush in many years to come.
