Short and Sweet: Diaries from an Actress

By Aubrey Daniels

Short and Sweet is a play festival featuring work written, directed, performed, and designed by students in Theatre I, II, III. Each student is featured in one play. I was in a play called The Crayon Catastrophe by Brianna Ramberg, a junior theatre major at Rush. Here is a log of everything that was going on through the six-week rehearsal process, in my point of view.

January 28 – February 1: My first week of rehearsal was great. I enjoyed working with my group for the first time. It was great to see how we worked together. Next week, I think we need to work on physicality. I think this group will work great together, and be able to make this play great.

February 4 – February 8: My second week of rehearsal went amazing. One of our problems was how we say the last line. We all were trying to help with this line for about fifteen minutes, and we still haven’t fully figured it out. Our play is coming together very quickly, and we all have our lines memorized.

February 11 – February 15: This third week, my rehearsals were really good. We are all completely comfortable with all of the blocking and lines. This whole week, we ran the scene over and over again. We finally figured out how we say the last line. Overall, this week was really good.

February 18 – February 22: This week was a very short week. We only had three rehearsals schedule. They went good, but I think that we needed more time. We had not big problems this week, and we just kept running the play a lot. Overall, this week was really good.

February 25 – March 6: It is the week before Short and Sweet and I am really scared. I am really nervous that I will mess up, even though I will probably do great. This isn’t my first performance, but it is still my first performance at Rush. This performance is going to be different from any other performance I’ve done before. Other performances that I have done have been musicals. This is going to be the first time I’m going to be in a play.  I am trying to keep practicing my lines so that I don’t mess them up. I am really excited for this!

March 7 -March 11: Short and Sweet went better than I thought. I felt like I was going to mess everything up, and forget my lines, but I didn’t. It all went great. The audience during the show was very good, which helped my performance be better. My rehearsal process went really good. I enjoyed working with this group for these six weeks. It was great to see how we worked together because we never did before. I am so excited to do this again in the future.
