Hispanic Heritage Assembly

Hispanic Heritage Month (from September 15th-October 15th) is a celebration of Hispanic and Latino culture in the US. This year’s theme was “Hope!” Here at Rush, we hold a student-led assembly to recognize this month every year. Many dancers, singers, instrumentalists, and artists performed at the assembly on October 15th to share their culture with staff and students.

When asked what Hispanic Heritage Month means to her, Gaby Rodriguez, a sophomore vocal major, said, “It’s a month to celebrate my roots– embrace them.” She also stated, “I was nervous at the beginning [to share my culture] but once I saw how supportive people were, all that went away. I feel really happy because a lot of people said they liked it. I’m happy I got to share my culture with other people.”

Mia Hernandez, a sophomore dance major, expressed the joy she found in having the opportunity to “celebrate Hispanic cultures and communities, and to teach others about it. It’s so much fun. I really like performing on stage and it’s a good way to express my talents. I feel accomplished, but empty because I don’t have anything to practice for anymore. I would love to do it again next year.”

Luckily, at Benjamin Rush, the chance to perform never stops! Upcoming events include our vocal concerts, African American History Assembly, and countless more performances and exhibits.
