Student Government Elections

By Mic Pulaski: It’s that time of year again! Time for Student Government elections! This is a very exciting and important time of year here at Rush. This is the time of year that you vote for a Student Body President and Vice President; but you’re also voting for four people from your class to represent your class.

“Who should I pick?” is the question that everybody asks themself when it comes to choosing who to vote for. Sometimes, you already know who you want to vote for by the end of your election assembly, but sometimes it’s a bit more complicated than that. Some tips I can share about selecting who to vote for are:

  • Before you go, think about what you want to happen this year from Student Government. Think about what you want to see in the candidates you vote for.
  • Listen to each candidate’s speech, listen for what they plan to do if they get elected.
  • Don’t vote for someone just because your friend is voting for them. Your vote is yours and yours only. (Also on that subject, you don’t need to tell other people who you voted for if you don’t want to!!)
  • In the end, vote for whoever you think is best suited for office. This isn’t a popularity contest, don’t try to make it one.

For anybody new, or for anyone that just hasn’t voted in an election yet, the election works in a fairly simple way. First, in advisory your class is called down to the auditorium for an Election Assembly. During the assembly, each candidate for your class’ Student Representatives and the candidates for President and Vice President will give their speeches. Then, when they’re all finished giving their speeches, a google form will be posted to your “Class Of___” classroom. This is how you cast your vote. You then simply select the four people you think are best to represent your class, and who you want to be President and Vice President. Easy as pie!

The election schedule is as follows:

  • Freshmen: Monday, September 23rd
  • Sophomores: Tuesday, September 24th
  • Juniors: Wednesday, September 25th
  • Seniors: Thursday, September 26th

(Also FYI Friday is a half day!!)
